Music Scholarships (2012-2013 Form 1 entrants)

*There is no briefing seminar held in 2011-2012.

Every year about six to eight awards of music scholarship are offered to Primary Six applicants who successfully pass an audition and interview conducted by the music department usually in December / January on condition that they can gain admission to the school to study Form 1 through normal procedures in March / April*

The deadline for the scholarship application by post/mail or by person is on Monday, 9th January, 2012. The date of interview for accepted applicants will be confirmed by phone between 10th - 11th January, 2012. Interviews will be held during 12th - 18th January, 2012 in the Music Center, 4th Floor, Francis H B Wong Teaching Building.

Scholars will benefit from free tuition on one designated instrument during their time at Wah Yan and their TONG FAI is waived as long as they can retain their title. In addition, they are on the honour list of music scholars, which is a most sought-after honour for musicians at Wah Yan.

Awards are made on the basis of audition and interview; there is no written paper. Candidates should be a competent performer in one musical instrument**, western or Chinese, preferably two, at least one at Grade 6 or higher of the Associated Board or any recognized examining organization although it is not necessary to have taken the examination. They should prepare two contrasting pieces for audition for each instrument. The audition is designed to discover signs of talent and interest as much as to test actual performance; the award of a scholarship is based more on potential than on actual attainment. Scholarship awardees should promise to play an active role in rehearsals and performances arranged by the school. Further details are available from the Director of Music who will be pleased to discuss matters with prospective candidates and their parents.

*Being offered a music scholarship does not imply that a candidate has been given a Form 1 school place. However, it would be in his interest to mention the offer when attending a general school admission interview conducted by the school in March/April.

**In 2011-12, priority will be given to players of the following orchestral instruments:

(Chinese) Pipa琵琶, Suona嗩吶

(Western) Viola中提琴, Double Bass低音大提琴, Bassoon低音管/ 巴松管,
French Horn法國號 and Trombone長號

All candidates are expected to have at least ABRSM G.6 Merit or above or equivalent for consideration in their instrument.
